Sierra Leone Reproductive and Child Health Project
The Sierra Leone RCHP is a $30 million ACGF-financed operation. The project, to be implemented in two phases, aims to reduce the under five mortality rate in 12 districts by 9% by 2011 and contribute to an overall decrease in maternal mortality rates, as part of a 10-year program.
Phase I in the amount of $6 million was made effective on February 6 2008. Preparation of Phase II of the project is currently being supported by an ACGF project preparation advance (PPA) in the amount of $1 million.
The rationale for ACGF involvement is based on Sierra Leone's country qualification as a transformational country, the sector's innovative strategy to achieve significant results, the project's ability to scale up funding to achieve greater impacts, and a country-based, multi-sector model to tackle under-five mortality.
The total estimated project cost is about US$130 million, of which US$100 million will be provided by Department for International Development (DFID) over a 10-year period.
